"The Earlier Days..."
My First Teenager Car--1964 Chevelle
The photo of the Chevelle was taken around 1973. It was my very
first car right out of high school and I know where this car is today.
It is sitting on blocks in an empty field near Phenix City, AL with a Big
Block under where the hoold would be, if it still had one. I visited
its location about a year ago and it still has things like the Pioneer
speakers I put in it in my parent's back yard one night, a hole in the inner
front fender panel where the harmonic balancer flew off one day while
driving down my neighborhood street and a sheet metal patch riveted into the
trunk where the driveshaft came flying out one night when I had it to the
headliner with girls.
Herman "Big Mac" Baker's 1968 Camaro
The photos of the Camaro were taken
probably around 1976 at the Phenix Dragway in Phenix City, AL just before I
moved to California. Look at me
behind the wheel with that big Afro! That was a big fashion change
since the Chevelle days just a few years before. The car had a 468 cubic inch Big
Block with one carburetor and at the time these photos were taken, it was
equipped with a Powerglide. It was a consistent 10-second
bracket car.
Herman Baker can be seen in the burnout photo with his
hand on the roof. He was 6' 9" and weighed over 300 pounds! He died in 1992. He was
my best friend at the time and had a huge influence on my interest in drag
racing, especially PRO Stock.
